Details about DOYALD YOUNG:

For 43 years, Doyald Young has specialized in the design of logotypes, corporate alphabets, and typefaces. He has designed logotypes and trademarks for the industrial design firm of Henry Dreyfuss Associates, California Institute of Technology, University of California at Los Angeles, exhibition catalogs for UCLA’s Clark Memorial Library, Los Angeles Marathon Seal; The Music Center of Los Angeles County, Mattel Toys, Max Factor, and Vidal Sassoon. Recently he completed the redesign of Prudential Insurance Company of America’s company name and corporate font. With Don Bartels, designed the GE Logo Font for General Electric Company’s corporate identity program. As an associate of International Design Associates of Japan, designed logotypes for over a dozen hotels, including restaurants, bars and amenities: ANA Hotel Tokyo; Hilton International Japan; Tokyo Hilton; Hilton Osaka; Narita Golf Club; Pacific Star Hotel; Guam, Palace Hotel Tokyo; and the new 30-story Kintetsu Hotel at Universal City Osaka, and designed The Hawaiian Sony Open logo for Mari Makinami, Design Resource.

His entertainment credits include: Liza Minnelli and Frank Sinatra specials; Disney’s 30th Anniversary Celebration; Harry Connick Jr.; k.d. lang; Bette Midler; Prince; Joan Rivers; The Grand Reopening of Carnegie Hall; The Grammy Awards; The Annual Academy of Country Music Awards; The Golden Globe Awards; The Tony Awards, and most recently, the Art Directors Guild logo.

Mr. Young has served as typographical consultant to Xerox Corporation, Southern California Edison Company, and Bechtel Corporation,
designed fonts for Esselte Letraset, Agfa Corporation, Visual Graphics Corporation, and consulted with Emerson Stern, and the Salk Institute on the development of a written American Sign Language alphabet for The National Institutes of Health. For Faidon Design of Gotenberg Sweden, collaborated on the design of Vestia Securities.

He is a member of AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Artists), and lectures and consults with students at Art Center College of Design, where he has taught lettering, logo design, and typographic basics for 27 years. Recently Art Center named him “Inaugural Master of the School.”
Mr. Young is the author of Logotypes & Letterforms, Handlettered Logotypes and Typographic Considerations, and a 388-page volume, Fonts and Logos, that addresses basic letter and font structure, typography, and logo design. The volume was awarded a Silver Medal by the Western Art Directors Club, November, 2000.

The student portfolio review is an opportunity before entering the job market to get some critical advice from some of the Jacksonville area's finest designers, art directors, photogaphers and illustrators. Participants must be prepared to present 10-15 pieces. (If you don't feel ready for this review, you may participate as an observer)

Register by March 26, 2004 and *save $10* off any category of registration. After March 26, full registration fees will apply.

Michael Gericke from Pentagram is this years guest speaker.
Michael joined Pentagram’s New York office in 1986. As a partner in the firm he is responsible for graphic identity and corporate communication programs for a broad range of international organizations.
Michael has received many accolades from design associations and museums, including Fortune magazine's Beacon Award for the creation of outstanding strategic design programs. His identity, promotional and poster work appears regularly in international design exhibitions and is represented in the permanent collections of the Musée de la Poste in Paris, the Warsaw Poster Museum at Winalow, the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, the Neue Sammlung Museum in Munich, Japan's Ogaki Museum and, the Library of Congress in Washington, DC.
He has served on the Executive Committee of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), is a frequent lecturer at universities and professional organizations, and has taught identity design at the Cooper Union for Advancement of Science and Art in New York. He is also a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI).
